Themes of improving transparency in livestock farming, engaging with consumers and addressing water quality and nutrient management were prevalent at the 2012 Ohio Livestock Coalition Annual Meeting and Industry Symposium, held Friday in Lewis Center.
David White is the executive director of OLC and he and Ty Higgins talked about the continually changing conversation between producers and consumers.
One of the speakers at the OLC Annual Meeting was Charlie Arnot, CEO of the Center for Food Integrity. Ty asked Arnot if the message producers are giving is the one consumers want to hear.
Cargill’s director of communications was also a guest speaker. He shared with the audience about a segment his company did with the Oprah show last year and the impact he thought it made on consumers across the country.
In addition to the speakers, three state agency directors joined together to discuss nutrient management and water quality in Ohio – an issue that has been changing rapidly in the state and for which new rules are being proposed. Directors Jim Zehringer (ODNR), David Daniels (ODA) and Scott Nally (Ohio EPA) answered questions on water quality issues during a panel discussion.
