Temperature and Harvest Both Heat Up in Ohio Crop Progress


A warm week, where temperatures averaged 11 degrees above normal, helped push harvest last week according to Cheryl Turner, State Statistician, USDA, NASS, Ohio Field Office. There were 4.4 days suitable for fieldwork in Ohio during the week ending October 7. The warm temperatures allowed farmers to keep corn harvest ahead of the 5 year average. Phenomenal progress was made in harvesting soybeans last week; fifteen percent of the crop was harvested. Even with this tremendous progress, soybean harvest lagged the 5 year average. Winter wheat emergence was good and hay producers were cutting and baling as fields allowed. Other fieldwork included hauling and spreading manure, cover crop seeding, fertilizer applications, and fall tillage. The average moisture content of corn harvested last week was 19 percent and the average for soybeans was 13 percent.
