auren Ott, Norwalk, finished fourth in the 12-year-old Market Beef Showmanship class on Aug. 6. She also helped handle a hazardous situation when a steer got loose from another exhibitor and was running around the ring. It stopped by Ott, and she calmly grabbed its halter and handed it over to a ringman.

These Polypay triplets belonging to Don Van Nostran, Athens, were a hit with fairgoers on Aug. 2 in the OVMA Veterinary Education Center. Zach Tournoux, Canton, is an Ohio State University student in his fourth year of taking care of the animals in the OVMA animal birthing area. He is at the fair 24 hours a day for the entire event, typically sleeping on a cot near the pens.

Violet Cummings with School House Jams markets her more than 40 jam varieties to fairgoers at the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s Ohio Proud Farmers Market tent on Aug. 2 at the Ohio State Fair. This is her fourth year selling at the fair. Throughout the year, she sells more than 3,000 jars of jam to customers at Delaware County farmers markets.

The folks with Wally’s Great American BBQ, from Tiffin, serve up their Grand Champion ribs at the 14th Annual Ohio State Fair Pork Rib-off. Reserve Champion honers for ribs went to Smokin’ Joe’s Ribs, Columbus. Other winners were: Grand Champion Pulled Pork -- Hickory River Smokehouse, Tipp City; Reserve Pulled Pork -- Smokin’ Joe’s Ribs, Columbus; People’s Choice Award Winner -- Tony’s Restaurant, Findlay; Best BBQ Sauce containing Soy -- Tony’s Restaurant, Findlay.
