Ohio 2010 corn and soybean yields down from 2009

Ohio’s 2010 average corn yield is estimated at 163 bushels per acre, down 2 bushels from the November forecast, and down 11 bushels from the previous year. Producers harvested 3.27 million acres for grain this past year, compared to 3.14 million acres in 2009. Total State production of 533.0 million bushels is 2% below the 2009 total.

Acreage harvested for silage is estimated at 140,000 acres, down 30,000 acres from the previous year. The average silage yield is estimated at 17.0 tons per acre.

Ohio’s average soybean yield for 2010 is estimated at 48 bushels per acre, unchanged from the November forecast. Growers harvested 4.59 million acres of soybeans in 2010 from the estimated 4.60 million acres planted. Total soybean production is estimated at 220.3 million bushels, down 1% from the 222.0 million bushels produced in 2009.

Alfalfa yields averaged 3.30 tons of dry hay per acre in 2010, while all Other hay averaged 2.20 tons per acre. Production of All hay decreased slightly from 2009 to 2.87 million tons. Burley Tobacco production in Ohio for 2010 is estimated at 5.1 million pounds, a decrease of 25% from 2009. The average yield is estimated at 2,050 pounds from 2,500 harvested acres. Ohio’s Potato production in 2010 is estimated at 609,000 cwt., a decrease of 13% from 2009. Harvested potato acreage is estimated at 2,100, unchanged from the area harvested in 2009. The average State yield is estimated at 290 cwt. per acre, down 45 cwt. from the 2009 yield. Ohio’s winter wheat acreage for 2011 is estimated at 930,000 acres, this is up 150,000 acres from 2010.

U.S. corn for grain production is estimated at 12.4 billion bushels, down 1% from the November 1 forecast and 5% below the record high production of 13.1 billion bushels set in 2009. United States grain yield for 2010 is estimated at 152.8 bushels per acre. This is down 1.5 bushels from the November forecast and 11.9 bushels below the record high yield of 164.7 bushels per acre set in 2009. Area harvested for grain is estimated at 81.4 million acres, up slightly from the November forecast and up 2% from 2009.

U.S. Soybean production in 2010 totaled 3.33 billion bushels, down 1% from the November 1 forecast and down 1% from 2009. United States production is the second largest on record. The average yield per acre is estimated at 43.5 bushels, 0.4 bushel below the November 1 forecast and 0.5 bushel below last year’s record high yield.

Harvested area is up slightly from 2009 to a record high 76.6 million acres.

U.S. All hay production of dry hay for 2010 is estimated at 146 million tons, down 4% from the October 1 forecast and down 1% from the 2009 total. Area harvested is at 59.9 million acres, up slightly from both the October 1 forecast and from last year. The average yield, at 2.43 tons per acre, is down 0.12 ton from October and down 0.04 ton from the previous year.
