West Holmes FFA participated in the Holmes County Fair

The West Holmes FFA participated in the 2011 Holmes County Junior Fair. This was held August 8th through the 13th. During the fair, the chapter was involved in a variety of activities including exhibiting animals, creating a fair booth, and making a kids day presentation.

The fair booth was themed board games and games were chosen that represented the chapter activities throughout the year. The booth highlighted events the chapter participated in and showed pictures and statistics of the West Holmes FFA.  Cornhole boards made by last year’s freshmen members were also on display in the booth.

Monday of the fair, Kayla Chandler represented the FFA chapter in the Fair Queen contest.  Other members who were representatives of their 4-H Clubs in the Queen and King contest were Casey Schlauch who was named Queen and Tyler Schonauer who was named King. Marshall Overholt and Garrett O’Donnell were also named King Attendants.

Mandy Taylor was honored with being named the 2011 Citizenship Commissioners Award recipient.

Also on Monday, many members participated in the livestock shows. The poultry show took place with Marshall Overholt exhibited the 5th overall pen of three broiler project and Courtney Kozak was the 4th place senior broiler showman. In the turkey projects, Courtney Kozak showed the 8th Overall Turkey and Brittney Sigler showed the 9th overall turkey. Kozak was also third in senior showmanship. Madee Brewer was 3rd in Intermediate Showmanship.

Also on Monday, the Market goat and market and breeding sheep show took place.  Marshall Overholt was named Supreme goat showman. He also won Grand Champion Market Goat. Logan Brannon was Champion Senior Showman and Brittney Sigler was Reserve.  In the Sheep Show Gretchen Straits received Reserve Grand Champion Market Lamb and she was also named Supreme sheep showman. Elizabeth Overholt exhibited the 5th overall market lamb and was also the reserve champion senior showman. Tuesday of the fair, the market hog show took place with many FFA members exhibiting hogs. Wednesday the steer show took place. Bob Taylor exhibited the 7th overall steer and was the Reserve Senior Showman. Dustin Niehaus showed the Champion Beef Breeding Female. Wednesday was also Kids Day where the members of the chapter spent the afternoon in the 4-H booth making homemade Chia Pets. Thursday of the fair, members showed Dairy Steers and dairy feeders. In the dairy goat show Brittney Sigler exhibited the Reserve Champion pack goat. In the Rabbit show, Derek Ruetter was named Champion Senior Showman. On Thursday in the Pygmy goats, showed Brittany Sigler showed the Grand Champion Pygmy Doe.  Also members sold sheep, goats, and hogs on Thursday in the Livestock Sale. Friday the dairy show took place Derek Reutter was reserve Senior Showman. Elizabeth Overholt showed the Champion Junior Brown Swiss. Marshall Overholt exhibited the Junior Champion Guernsey and Junior Champion Holstein and also the champion overall Holstein. Marshall also showed the Supreme All-Breeds Overall Junior and Senior Champion. Also, Friday evening members sold their poultry projects, pen of three fryers, dairy feeders, dairy steers, dairy baskets, and market beef steers. We would also like to congratulate Megan Miller on exhibiting the Reserve Champion Steer at The Ohio State Fair. The members of the West Holmes FFA had quite a successful fair and hope for more to come. They would like to thank the Holmes County Senior Fairboard and OSU Extension for making the fair possible.
