OFBF’s Gearhardt receives national award

Larry Gearhardt, long time employee of the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation (OFBF), has received the Excellence in Agricultural Law Award from the American Agricultural Law Association (AALA). The award recognizes AALA members for outstanding contributions to the legal profession and the agricultural community. AALA is the only national organization focusing on the legal needs of the agricultural community.

Over nearly 20 years of service, Gearhardt’s work as a Farm Bureau lobbyist, analyst and attorney was instrumental in many public policy achievements. He was a key contributor to Farm Bureau’s legislative efforts to transfer permitting authority for livestock farms from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency to the Ohio Department of Agriculture. Other accomplishments he contributed to include updates to Ohio’s line fence law, eminent domain legislation strengthening protection of landowner rights and various transportation issues such as weight variances and the use of slow moving vehicle signs and speed identification symbols.

Gearhardt also organized or spoke at hundreds of meetings on a variety of timely subjects including Ohio’s current agricultural use value (CAUV) program, agricultural district laws, oil and gas drilling, estate planning, and business succession planning.
