BEST Program banquet

The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) invites you to support youth in the BEST Program as the 2011-2012 year wraps up with the annual Awards Banquet held at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus. Several representatives from program sponsors Bob Evans Farms, Farm Credit Services of Mid-America, Green Oak Farms, M.H. Eby, Ohio Farm Bureau Federation and Burroughs Frazier Farms will be attending to present awards totaling more than $35,000 in belt buckles, furniture, jackets, show materials and other awards.

The evening will feature the accomplishments of more than 315 youth participants who nominated more than 415 head of market animals and heifers into the program. Each participant in the program will receive a participant ward courtesy of the program’s sponsors. Additionally, 180 total individual awards will be presented which includes 42 champion and reserve awards, top 10 crossbred steers, 10 bred-and-owned winners, top 10 novice market animal and heifer exhibitors and 48 showmanship winners. Recipients of the $1,000 BEST scholarships, and photography and video contest winners will be recognized. Also, 30 participants who traveled to all 16 shows will be recognized.

A highlight of the evening will be when a BEST participant’s name is drawn to win the use of a 26 x 8 foot livestock trailer for the 2012-2013 BEST season. Eby trailer donates the lease and more than 3,300 names will be entered into the drawing this year for every animal nominated and every animal showed at each show throughout the season. Every BEST participant is encouraged to attend the banquet as the winner must be present to win.

Throughout the BEST season, participants are encouraged to collect pop tabs in support of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of central Ohio. The pop tab collection contest wraps up at the banquet. Pop tabs will be weighed and the participants with the most tabs win an iPod Touch. The county with the highest average of tabs collected per BEST participant will also be recognized.

The banquet begins at 5 p.m. in the Rhodes Center and is free to all BEST participants and siblings 8 years old and younger. Tickets are $15 for the public including parents, other family members and non-BEST participants. Reservations for the event are due to the OCA office by Wednesday, May 23. For more information or to RSVP, call the OCA office at 614-873-6736.

BEST is a youth program of the OCA that recognizes Ohio’s junior beef exhibitors through a series of shows. Juniors who participate in these sanctioned shows earn points for their placing at each show. The OCA BEST program promotes educating Ohio’s juniors about the beef industry’s issues and rewards the successful accomplishments and hard work of those junior beef producers.
