West Holmes FFA Members Participate in Holmes County Fair

The West Holmes FFA participated in the 2012 Holmes County Junior Fair. This was held August 6th-11th. During the fair the chapter was involved in many aspects of the fair. During the pre-fair preparations the chapter set up a booth. The booth was themed Olympic Games that represented the chapter activities. The booth highlighted events the chapter participated in throughout the year. Also displayed was the hard work the freshman did creating cornhole boards.

Monday of the fair Clay Armstrong represented the FFA chapter, and he was rewarded a King Attendant. Other chapter members that ran for the Holmes County Royal Contest were Mandy Taylor, Courtney Kozak, Dustin Niehaus who was also a King Attendant, and members Elizabeth and Marshall Overholt were awarded Fair King and Queen. Also Mandy Taylor was awarded with the 2012 Senior Leadership award and Elizabeth Overholt was awarded with the 2012 Senior Citizenship award. Members also competed in livestock shows. Courtney Kozak received 5th place for both showmanship and meat for her pen of three broilers, Brittney Sigler placed 4th in Showmanship, and Baily Boughman placed 11th. Courtney Kozak was Grand Champion Senior Showmanship, and 5th Meat Turkey, Audrey Ivers was awarded 7th place Meat Turkey and 9th in Showmanship, Dylan Holloway was awarded Reserve Grand Champion Intermediate Showmanship, other members that took turkeys to the fair were Kayla Bird, Logan Brannon, Rebekah Brannon, Tanner Goines, and Brittney Sigler. The Market Goats were also shown on Monday; Vincent Schlauch who was Grand Champion in the Meat Class, Morgan Hoxworth who received Reserve Champion in Intermediate for Showmanship, Brittney Sigler who received 5th place in Showmanship, Kayla Bird also competed. The Dairy Goat and Breeding oat show were also on that day, members who were involved were; Morgan Hoxworth, and Liz Overholt who was awarded with Senior Showmanship, Supreme Showman and Champion Doe. Gretchen Straits was our only member involved with the lamb show, she was the Supreme Showmanship Champion, and she was 1st in her class and the Reserve Grand Champion. Straits also took a Breeding Ewe, which she was rewarded with the Champion Ewe.

On Tuesday of the fair the Market Hog show took place with many FFA members exhibiting hogs. Members that showed; Morgan Hoxworth who placed 3rd in Intermediate Showmanship, Mandy Taylor who placed 3rd in her class, Gretchen Straits who placed 3rd in her class, and 8th for Showmanship, Clay Armstrong, Grayson Miller, Tanner Goines, Bailey Boughman, Logan Brannon, Liz Overholt who placed 11th in Showmanship, Megan Miller who placed 2nd in her class and 4th in Showmanship.

Wednesday members competed all throughout the beef show. Dustin Niehaus and Megan Miller took Beef Feeders, and Miller placed 4th in her class. Niehaus and Miller also took Beef Breeding; Miller was the Reserve Grand Champion in Showmanship and the Reserve Grand Champion in her class. Gretchen Straits was out only member who took a Market Steer, she was the Grand Champion in Senior Showmanship, 2nd in her class and 2nd in the Holmes County Breed Class. Also members were involved in helping with Kids Day were members Audrey Ivers, Matt Schlegel, Samantha Krejci, Clay Armstrong, Harlie Spurlock, Mandy Taylor, and Atlee Miller. They taught kids how the food pyramid works while making bracelets.

On Thursday the Dairy Steers and Feeders were shown. Members that were involved in the Dairy Steer show were; Tristan Ramseyer who placed 4th in his class and Chris Sprang who placed 3rd in his class. Members who were involved in the Dairy Feeder show were Vincent Schlauch, Tristan Ramseyer, and Morgan Hoxworth.

On Friday of the fair the Dairy Show happened. Members who showed Dairy Heifers were Tristan Ramseyer who placed 1st in his class, Jace Freewalt who placed 1st in his class, Huck Hay who placed 2nd in his class, Liz Overholt who was rewarded 2nd place for senior showmanship, Champion Brown Swiss Heifer and Reserve Supreme Heifer, and Morgan Hoxworth. Members who were involved with the Dairy show were; Tanner Goines, Courtney Kozak who was the Senior Showman, Supreme Showman, Grand Champion Jersey, Supreme All Breed Champion, and the 1st place Hersey Aged Cow, and Liz Overholt who placed 2nd Brown Swiss Cow. Throughout the week we had members competing in the horse shows, the members were; Megan Dawson, Logan Brannon, and Beth Klein.
