On Wednesday, September 26, Zane Trace FFA Officers and their advisor Jennifer Johnston traveled to Columbus for a day filled with learning. The officers had the opportunity to tour the statehouse, met with Senator Bob Peterson, and listen to Governor John Kasich speak. This trip was very useful for the officers, as they got to speak with some of the leaders of the state and learn how to more effectively lead Zane Trace FFA.

The day started with a tour of the statehouse, where the group learned all about the history of Ohio’s statehouse, and was able to see both the Ohio House of Representatives chamber and the Ohio Senate chamber. The group also had the unique opportunity to view an informal meeting of some of the members of the Ohio House of Representatives.

Their statehouse tour ended outside of Senator Bob Peterson’s office, and they had a talk with Senator Peterson and his assistant Vanessa. Senator Peterson spoke with the group about the importance of knowing your legislatures and being involved in the political process. He also shared some personal stories with the group, and took them through an average day in the life of an Ohio Senator.

From there, the officers listened to a speech by Governor John Kasich. He spoke of the importance of perusing career in which you are very passionate about, and shared with many FFA members his own thoughts on the importance of agriculture within the world.

This experience proved to be a very educational experience for the Zane Trace Officer team. And they went home with a very different outlook. They now understand the importance of being informed about the political process and making wise decisions that will affect their future, and the future of Ohio.
