Overview of the 2013 I-75/I-71 Ohio Crop Tour

The Ohio Ag Net & Ohio’s Country Journal is embarking on the 2013 I-75/I-71 Ohio Crop Tour presented by Agro-Culture Liquid Fertilizers. Two teams will be crisscrossing I-75 and I-71 reporting crop conditions and yield estimates August 7 and 8. Over the two days, each team will sample a random corn and soybean field in 20 counties (for a total of 40 counties). The map of the counties is below. The groups will be estimating yield and overall condition for corn fields and the conditions and yield potential of soybean fields. We will be updating the results as we go, so check back regularly on our progress.

Checking Corn Populations

Corn Yield Estimate Formula

EARS per 1/1000 of an acre X no. of rows (width)

X no. of kernels per row (length) X .01116

= ESTIMATED BUSHELS per ACRE at 15.5%.

Soybean Assessment Criteria

Canopy height, first node height, pod observation, general field condition/disease or pest pressure, yield potential (poor/good/excellent)
