I was fortunate enough to have one of my April 2014 blogs (“Mountain Monsters” — They’re more familiar than you think) catch the attention of the folks at Destination America who produce the show. A few e-mails were exchanged and before long it was all set up for me to have an interview with Trapper, one of the stars of the show.
Of course I was very excited, but a little nervous. I really like the program and I enjoy letting my imagination run wild as I watch it. I was afraid I might meet a polished actor rather than the man from the mountains that I had grown to admire on the show. Luckily, my fears were not founded.
As I sat down to talk to Trapper amid the forests of Salt Fork State Park, it became obvious pretty quickly that he is just a normal “good old boy” who hasn’t been changed by his television fame.
Although I refuse to make claims about the legitimacy of the “monsters” or the evidence shown during the shows, I can tell you that from what I can see, the men of “Mountain Monsters” are truly a group of fun-loving, hardworking hunters from Ohio and West Virginia. I personally think they would be a fun group of guys to get to know.
Though the program rarely portrays them as such, these guys are also a well-rounded group of intelligent and skilled men. Don’t let the TV drama fool you. These guys know the woods and what they are about, but they are also intelligent enough to know what draws an audience. Here are some quotes from Trapper about the guys in the show.
Huckleberry
“Huckleberry was an operator, and I was a boilermaker so we knew each other. Sometimes I pay so much attention to what‘s going on in front of me that I need someone to watch my back all the time. So he’s my ‘Huckleberry.’ He takes care of us.”
Buck
“He is Huckleberry’s friend. We just love Buck. The first time I met him he was a real skeptic. He’s coming around. We needed someone to do the heavy lifting and the grunt work for us. We’ve got some age on us — me and Huckleberry and Jeff. He’s always game for anything.”
Willy
“Willy is my neighbor. He’s the jack-of-all-trades. What a hard worker he is. During the filming season, he went from 215 pounds to 175 pounds building all those traps.”
Wild Bill
“We had a mutual friend say, ‘You’ve got to meet this Wild Bill guy,’ and we needed a really good climber to help Willy out on traps. They are both expert climbers. He is exactly the way he acts on the show. He’s the kind of guy you only give one shell to.”
Jeff
“Jeff was a good researcher so we brought him on. He knows his stuff.”

Trapper (About himself)
“The wampus beast, or wampus cat, in northern pleasant county is a pet peeve of mine. I have a ritual that virtually every Sunday morning I go up into the northern part of Pleasant County. I have a pipeline that I walk right away that is real fresh with tracks.”
In addition to finding out more about the men in the show, I had a few questions for Trapper about some of the episodes I had seen. In particular, I asked for details about my favorite creatures featured on the show, “The Hellhound of Kentucky.” During this episode, it appeared that, while the guys were searching for the beast in a corn field, the creature hit Trapper in the elbow and nearly knocked him down. I asked for clarification as to what really hit him.
“That’s terrible in that corn field,” he said. “It had to have been him. He made passing charges on us. I swung around and he hit that elbow, and he virtually knocked me down. We never got a clear view of him. You can’t see in those darn corn fields. I can’t even believe I took the team in there after him. He used those corn fields for cover. He moved from corn field to corn field undetected. In a corn field, if you got in there just after it rained you could see tracks. There was one set of tracks where you could tell he was after coyotes. His tracks and the coyotes ran together. It was pretty cool.”
So whether or not you chose to believe in the folklore or just consider it a form of Friday night entertainment, “Mountain Monsters” is sure to fit the bill. This fast paced adventure-filled show keeps viewers guessing and on the edge of their seats as the men chase after critters in the Appalachian region. When questioned on the hunting style the guys portray during the show, Trapper said with a laugh, “Nobody would want to watch us lay on a hill with a night-vision scope all night.”
I’ll agree with that. The fast-paced action of the show combined with the mysterious creatures it showcases are what keep me watching.
Mountain Monsters airs Friday nights at 10 p.m. on Destination America.

I don’t care what anyone says, I love the show and the mountain monster men!!
You have the right to believe whatever you want, But no one with a Mind could ever believe a bunch of crap like the Mountain Monsters TV show. I am from the same County that Most of the show is talking about and Have Hunted and Trapped it for decades and have never seen nor Heard any of the crap they say is real. The show is just plain stupid and makes a mockery out of TV. Jim
I will admit the show is entertaining I don’t believe it too much but I do enjoy watching it and if any of it is true I would love to see if to be proven I’ve hunted my whole life and I can tell you this I believe there’s more and that’s all I’m going to say on that
Does anyone know what brand and style name Trappers hat is I would really like to pick one up
Im an experienced hunter 30 years. Since I was twelve. I love this show. Im confident that I can contribute my skills for this show! Is it possible to be part of the show?
These guys coudnt catch a cold!!! FAKE AS THEY COME!!!
I don’t know if what they find is real, or not (I kind of hope it is, because I find the idea fascinating)… but I love all of the guys! They’re great fun and each contribute something to the entertainment value of the show. Even my 7 year old daughter quotes one of their more benign sayings… “we need back-up!” – Buck LOL! Wild Bill is my hubby’s favorite. Bill is a character. :-D I love ’em all!
Great work, guys ;-) Looking forward to more shows!
I’m glad somebody confirmed my impression about these guys being pretty sharp on the uptake. I could tell even by the way they talk that these were no dummies. You can’t be stupid and go after creatures like this and expect to survive. By the way, these creatures do exist and have been known about for a very long time. I can remember reading stories in FATE magazine years ago about some of them and this was before they became more commonly known by programs such as these. These guys have a lot of guts and I admire them for their courage and tenacity. Heck, sometimes they have to worry about the other 2-legged critters in the woods more than the monsters! I would love to meet any of these people at any time and hear their stories. Hope they can keep up the good work and I hope they catch something that doesn’t break out of their trap.
This is one vulgar and stupid show after 10 years it is still the dumbest show I have ever watched and now the cast is worse than ever about saying son of a bitch and bastard come on isn’t this for the kids also. When are they ever going to catch something or shoot something stupid show.
This show is a hoot!
My dad’s father’s family is from West Virginia so it is fun for me to watch this show.
I worked in forensics for years, have a degree in Zoology and have attended classes at the FBI Academy at Quantico; however I still believe there are species Out There that have yet to be discovered.
Maybe most of this show is hokum but it’s still fun and gives me a lift!
What a joke, just a bunch of guys yelling, going in circles and never catch anything in those foolish traps!! But I can’t stop watching the show,
I would just like to say I love the show and so does my son. It doesn’t matter if its real or fake its a group of good ole boys having fun and trying to bring us some intertainment. So to all u haters turn the damn channel!!!! Or shut ur damn mouth!!, thanks to all 6 of u guys its a great show.love it!!!! Keep it up!!!!!
Ou’re one hell offat most of you people seem to conveniently forget is that these men are trying to “trap” not “kill” folklore animals that nobody else on earth has EVER CAUGHT!!!! I think these are good, honorable men who are extremely brave. Some of you who have made comments you might see come from a nine year old, nothing but negativity and immature should try to pick up a book and learn a
thing or two….until then like mom always said “if you have nothing
nice or constructive to say then keep your yap shut”. Trapper, i’m an innate good judge of character and your character is something to be
emulated by men young and old. Buck, you’re. Just a good ‘ol boy
with more to offer then people who really don’t know what they’re watching realize (you’re one heck of a hunter and moreover you are an even better teammate’-I played football for 17 seasons I know a good teammate when I see one). Willie, if you were not an expert at building the absolutely amazing traps you design…..you’d be designing the next space shuttle!!!! You have a true gift and, like Buck, you’re a great teammate). Huckleberry, Id love to have you as a next door neighbor. ….you don’t talk much but I bet you’re one funny cat. From what I’ve seen on all of your shows I’d pick you to watch my back under ANY circumstances. And the best for last, Wild Bill….it’s obvious you’d give your life to save any one of your teammates…..to me that’s the ultimate a man can ever do….most men would cower in the corner, you would be the first one there to help your friends, you’ve got the biggest heart of just about any man I’ve ever seen.
Oh and one final team member, Jeff…….you’re presence on the show with your knowledge and your learned history of these strange creatures is irreplaceable. You’re a irreplaceable team member and you too are an excellent team member. You’ve also given me a goid belly laugh….when you were walking behind Trapper and whispered “hey there’s a track”……and it was Trappers!!!! Just too funny. Keep coming up with interesting information about these creatures, I think the show could use 5 more minutes of history behind these rsre creatures, God bless all of you and please stay safe or Bucks mom might get pissed off!!!!! Lastly, I know its a long shot, but my one wish in life (i dont have many, would be to go along on one of your scouting trips, Id really like to get to know you guys, i understand that you most likely cant do it but you dont get what you dont ask, right?
If not send me an email or two and let me know what youre planning on going after…..dont leave out the funny details! !!! Thanks, Mike
This is Mike again, I left a few things out. First sorry about the mispelled words!!!! Also, I dont think I gave Trapper his proper due…
Even though Im 51 and you’re too young to be my granpa (I grew up without any, you would be my choice. You’re kind but stern when called for and you’re a good teacher. You are, without a doubt the perfect team captain. My dad and I were wondering what kind of gun you carry? ? I wanted to leave my email because Ive got some good ideas (at least I think they are, lol) DocMikeGoUSC@gmail.com. my phone is 9498731118. Hope to hear from you by mail or phone whichever is good. Stay safe. Mike
Huckleberry daughter was my caregiver for some time when i was very sick she always told me about them i a retired marine and i would love to meet these guy’s and go on an investigation with them i believe that there are many things in the world we do not know about and probably won’t get to know about due to the fact that they are very good at hiding from us. But I do wish they would get hair and blood samples and photos and even put one to sleep with a shot. They should put night vision camera in the traps and even stream it live for the t.v. viewers. I have lots of time and knowledge about finding stuff in the woods. Please let me help you one night to find these creatures.
I love these guys and I don’t care if they ever catch a thing. It’s just good old fun. Wild Bill. What can one say about him except I’d love to hang out with him. Come to think about it I think I’d rather hang out in the woods with those guys than go to the country club and schmooze with most of the Real Housewives of…fill in the blank.
I have never seen so much stupidity in one single post before. I am in awe.
I think most everyone knows that this show is for entertainment only. But, that’s what’s missing from television lately..entertainment. These guys are hilarious and fun to watch.
It makes me laugh that’s for sure. Would love to watch them filming.
The key to proof that its 100000% fake is the plot is the same, the script is the same. The “hoo rahs”, the lock and load of guns, and the word “SOB” is used generously. Then, these traps. The beast always breaks out. You would think if some creature broke out of your first 5 traps, you would build it stronger. That would force them to catch something, and would not allow them to say “That SOB broke out of our trap”, “we will get this SOB next time”, “He won this one, but will get the SOB”, whatever. It was comical the first 10 times, now its just dumb.
There are no creatures. They are not interested in catching anything, and wont. There are big cats, bears, and hogs—that is what these creatures are, and maybe wild dogs sometimes. They are only interested in telling the fairy tale, not catching anything, its obvious there is nothing to catch, or they would have caught something by now. They would have a picture. Notice the “eyewitness” always has photos, but they only show a very brief glance or fuzzy view of it. The audience is never allowed to study the pic. If there were that many “bigfoots’, there would be many many sightings, and not just by these “experts”.
I believe the other bigfoot show more, they never see one, but continue to try. These guys always see one, and have a confrontation, but never get a good look, a pic, hair, blood, nothing. there is nothing.
I’m from WV and have hunted with these guys off the show all are great hunters and trappers and if you don’t think Bigfoot, wampus beast, and these wild hounds aren’t out there your full of crap cause I have seen them all and there are not any other 5 guys I would want in the woods with me other than them some of it has to be done for production because they are told to for entertainment but don’t let the show fool you these are some of the best hunters and veterans of military I have ever met and buck is one of the best animal callers there are out there like I said before don’t let the show fool you they know what they’re doing the yelling and swearing is the part the production company ask for so that’s why they do that hoping to go hunting with them again real soon.
Anyone with a small smidgeon of trapping knowledge would never expect to trap ANY animal while they’re stomping and raising a ruckus in the same area they’re trying to trap it. These guys are expert woodsmen? Not hardly. This show is so far beyond belief it’s ludicrous.
Why don’t they use night vision when there out in the bush instead of flashlights ?
I want to know about all the people following them it’s kinda creepy but that’s entertainment. They should use night vision equipment. Much safer for them.
Jim, Greg,& baba….. I Agree Totally !!
The Only Yahoos are the comics in this show. And the other show with matt moneymaker is Fake as can be. When U set a trap, U Can Not do it the way they do it. They pollute the whole area on scent alone. And Only 2 of these guys could get up in a tree stand. What about Dogs ?? Americans breed for the dollar. Germans breed for Excellence. My friends and I hunted all our lives. Some compete, some hold records. But We Don’t drink moonshine and see the boogey man.
The show IS a fake; the people on the show are actors. “Trapper” aka John Tice (real name) was born in new York and also was a football player in the 80’s for the NFL. the others are actors too. he creator of MM also anonymously write the show. look at IMBD.COM http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3427748/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t1

Those are two completely different people with the same name, moron.
I bet the camera crew has a blast with these guys, probably never stop laughing! How fun would it be to run around in the woods for a few hours and get paid for it!
I love all the discussion over the validity of the show. After watching for 10 minutes it’s pretty obvious right. I mean can anyone actually be so…..I’m trying to think of a kind work for stupid…..”cerebrally challenged” to buy this as real?
I always wondered why when they say they can see a monster the camera is always pointing the opposite direction. And why wouldnt you put a camera trap in or around the trap? FAKE!!!
Great Comedy hilarious and fun to laugh at these morons getting paid to act stupid. great fun to laugh at West Virginians.
These hillbilly’s don’t even have bullets. funny as all heck watching these dimwits. Wonder if they bathe?
Amen jim…
Lol! Fake as all hell but can’t stop watching it!
This show is Totally Scripted for Television Entertainment Only. Believers should contact Michael Downs Snipe Hunting Service. Question…. if cast members get a Divorce, are They Still Brother & Sister ???
It is as fake as the WWE but it is also funny as hell. I watch the WWE for entertainment value, not for the truth of it. Mountain Monsters and The WWE are funny and entertaining. Who cares if they are fake. Most shows on TV are fake. Almost every cop show on TV is fake. Juat entertainment is all they are.
LOVE, Love, Love this show.
Here’s a good way to tell if it’s real… All these amazing findings… And yet nothing in the news papers… Nothing spoken on TV.. News…. Hahah this show is very enjoyable…I do not dismiss the idea of these mythical.. Folklore creatures.. That’s the fun. Part…This show is very Blair witch project in style
I think the show is hilarious. How many of the group had military experience? It’s grown men reliving their youth having a snipe hunt, and like Ashley says, it’s done in the style of Blair Witch Project. What a hoot!
My wife and I love this show. These guys make us laugh and it is very entertaining. I like each and every one of them. I have all of the episodes on DVR and watch them frequently. Do I believe every thing I see and hear. Not necessarily. But it doesn’t matter much. because I would rather watch them then 99% of all of the other corporate crap that we get spoon fed every day of our lives. Besides, they haven’t killed anything and I don’t like to watch things being killed. It brings me no pleasure.
Three seasons and we have yet to see one rifle discharged on the show. Also – whenever the creature is nearby, why does the camera man swing the camera around wildly instead of trying to get a clear picture of the monster???
This show is the worst. They claim to be professional trappers and in 3 seasons they haven’t trapped anything. The show blows and so do they.
No it’s the same man. If you google “Cast of Mountain Monsters” it gives you the bio of each cast member and who writes the show, the sound and camera guys. If you read the bio of Trapper it shows his picture and his real name, his parents and siblings and what he did for a living. Do your research before you call people names bc your the one who looks like the moron!
Perhaps it is you who should do your research before you comment because Don was correct. They are in fact two different people with the same name. The IMBD wesite is incorrect. If you do a quick search for images of John Tice the football player/coach you can clearly see that he looks nothing John (Trapper) Tice. Furthermore I can tell you from personal knowledge that they are not the same person as I went to school with his son, his wife had worked at the local school, and I pass by his house everytime I go visit my family.
What a funny show. It reels you in like old WWF days. Trapper could be Hogan. The large boy can be King Kong Bundy. You get the point. As the old WWF use to have me by my TV every Monday. This show will do th3 same. Scripted outcomes are fun to watch. You gotta love love them idiots.
YA!!! SAY What you want BUT WHO’S GOING TO THE BANK EVERY WEEK!!! [HEHEHE]
Man y’all need to start the next season RIGHT NOW I miss the show
Please forward
Does it really matter if its real or not? Inst it just nice to kick back and watch something that for a short time helps us escape work, kids, chores, bills etc. I do wish they would curse less. So many worse things in life to vent about. Its a TV show. Nothing more, nothing less and the great thing about TV is …do I really need to say it, if you don’t like what your watching….change the channel.
