The 2015 Ohio State Fair is fast approaching and for those exhibitors wanting to compete, time is running out to sign up for competition.
“We’re getting really close to the deadline to enter a lot of our competitions, specifically our livestock competitions. The deadline to enter those is June 20. What’s nice is over the past couple of years, we’ve done a lot of efforts to try to encourage people to enter online,” said Alicia Shoults, Ohio Expo Center and State Fair Director of Marketing and Public Relations. “So for a number of the species, you can actually go to our website and enter right there online, and for some of the species not quite capable of that yet, you can go ahead and print off a printer friendly entry form and mail it back to us.
Though many entries are due on the 20th, some are due at the beginning of July.
“There are a couple of exceptions. The dog show deadline to enter is July 1. The open horse show is July 1 and the junior horse show is July 13. We’ve had a little bit of a change with our poultry and that’s shifted some of those deadlines as well,” she said.
As is the norm from year to year, the Ohio State Fair is welcoming new events and activities for 2015 to both its livestock and non-exhibition sides.
“We’ve got a couple new things going on on the livestock side. We’ve been working with our beef exhibitors to do EID tags this year. So we’ll be doing EID tags and scanning when all of those exhibitors arrive and we’ve been doing some DNA with that as well. That’s a little bit of a new change,” Shoults said. “We’re looking forward to going into our second year of the dairy feeder calf show, which was really successful last year.”
Other non-agricultural changes will also be welcomed to this year’s festivities including a custom ice cream flavor that will be available to guests.
“With the fair, we always focus on having lots of fun, new attractions when you have some time get away from the barns to go and see some of the new exhibits. We’ve got a jumbo tic-tac-toe board that’s going to be in Central Park where you can play tic-tac-toe with your friends and family with gigantic Xs and Os,” she said. “We’ve got a ‘Wolves of the World’ show with the only traveling wolf pack. We have, of course, new food. We’ve got a new flavor of ice cream this year that’s going to be exclusive to the Ohio State Fair. I just heard a couple days ago it’s going to be elephant ear flavored ice cream.”
