As backpacks are packed and school buses roll again, parents everywhere focus on setting their children up for a successful year. While school supplies and schedules are important, one key factor often overlooked is nutrition—making sure kids start their day fueled, focused, and ready to learn. One of the simplest and most effective ways to support growing children is with a nutrient-rich glass of milk.
Milk has long been recognized as a nutritional powerhouse, especially for growing children. Packed with 13 essential nutrients, including calcium, vitamin D, protein, potassium, and vitamin B12, milk plays an important role in supporting overall health, development, and academic performance.
One of milk’s biggest benefits is its contribution to strong bones and teeth. During childhood and adolescence, the body is rapidly building bone mass, making calcium intake more important than ever. Milk provides a highly absorbable source of calcium, paired with vitamin D to help the body use it effectively. This powerful combination supports skeletal growth and helps build the foundation for lifelong bone health.
Beyond supporting bones, milk is also a valuable source of high-quality protein, which helps build and repair muscles. For active kids balancing school, sports, and extracurricular activities, protein is essential for maintaining energy levels and supporting recovery after a busy day.
As kids head back to school, it’s not just a return to the classroom; it’s also the start of busy practice schedules, games, and activities for many young athletes. Making sure children are properly fueled is just as important as keeping up with homework and assignments.
Dietitian Heather Mangieri highlights the importance of balanced nutrition, noting that growing, active kids need the right mix of carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats to perform at their best.
“For active kids, nutrition is about more than just calories. They need a balance of carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats to fuel activity, support growth and development, and recover afterward,” Mangieri explains.
Adding dairy to daily meals and snacks is an easy, effective way to meet those nutritional needs.
From the classroom to the playing field, simple choices can make a big difference. A pre-practice snack like cheese and crackers or yogurt can provide steady energy. At the same time, options like a smoothie or chocolate milk after a game can help replenish nutrients and support recovery. By including nutrient-rich dairy foods throughout the day, parents can help ensure their children stay energized, focused, and ready to succeed both in school and in sports.
Speaking of energy, milk provides a natural balance of carbohydrates, protein, and fat that helps keep kids feeling full and focused. Unlike sugary drinks that can lead to quick spikes and crashes in energy, milk provides lasting fuel to help children power through morning classes, homework, and after-school activities.
Dairy foods also support healthy growth, strong bones, and early brain development. According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, children ages 4–8 should consume about 2½ cups of dairy each day, while children ages 9 and older should aim for 3 cups daily. Including the recommended amount of dairy can help ensure kids are getting the nutrients they need to grow, learn, and thrive.
Dairy is a versatile and nutrient-rich part of a child’s diet that can be easily included in meals and snacks throughout the day. From a morning smoothie to cheese or yogurt at snack time, simple additions like these can fuel growing bodies and support focus in the classroom. By incorporating dairy into everyday routines, parents can help ensure their kids are ready to take on the school day—every day.
As the school year begins, remember that learning doesn’t just happen in the classroom; it starts with what kids put into their bodies. By making milk and dairy foods part of a balanced diet, parents can help provide the fuel children need to stay strong, focused, and ready for whatever the day brings.
This back-to-school season, raise a glass to better nutrition—and give kids the fuel they need to thrive.
