Farmers across the state have been busy this past week. The USDA Crop Progress Report released May 18 showed about half of Ohio’s corn and soybean crops have been planted.
The report detailed that 52% of Ohio’s corn is planted, well above the five-year average of 40%. That is up from 37% recorded in the May 11 report. Corn emerged was reported at 27%.
Soybeans were reported at 46% planted, ahead of the five-year average of 35%. The report released May 11 detailed only 34% of the crop planted. Soybeans emerged were recorded at 24%.
Winter wheat was reported 60% headed, with 68% rated good to excellent.

USDA says 33% of Ohio corn was planted as of May 3, up from 20% the week before and ahead of the five-year average of 15%. Corn emergence reached 12%, also ahead of the 3% average.

Ohio farmers made solid planting progress last week as field conditions improved, according to the latest USDA Crop Progress report.
Corn planting in Ohio reached 20% as of April 26, up from 9% the previous week and ahead of the five-year average of 6%. Corn emergence was reported at 3%.
Soybean planting also moved ahead, with Ohio at 19% planted, compared to 9% a week earlier and 7% on average. Soybean emergence was reported at 2%.
Oat planting reached 38% in Ohio, up from 18% last week but still behind the five-year average of 54%. Oats emerged stood at 15%, compared to the 20% average.
Winter wheat was rated 66% good to excellent, with 54% good and 12% excellent. Another 30% was rated fair, while 4% was poor to very poor. Winter wheat headed was reported at 1%.

Ohio farmers made solid planting progress over the past week, getting both corn and soybeans off to a faster-than-normal start. USDA says corn planting reached 9% as of April 19, a significant jump from just 1% the previous week and well ahead of both last year’s 2% and the five-year average. Soybean planting is also at 9%, up from 1% last week and running ahead of the typical 2% pace for this time of year.
Oat planting in Ohio reached 18%, up from 10% the week prior, with 5% of the crop now emerged. That remains a bit behind the five-year average pace, but progress is continuing. In the first USDA Crop Progress Report of the season, few numbers are on the board for Ohio with the exception of winter wheat ratings and oats. Ohio winter wheat is 1% very poor, 2% poor, 34% fair, 54% good, and 9% excellent. 5% of Ohio’s oats are planted, slightly behind the 7% five-year-average.
Nationally, 3% of the corn crop is planted and 28% of oats are in the ground.
Ohio topsoil moisture is 3% short, 54% adequate, and 43% surplus. Subsoil moisture is noted as 2% very short, 15% short, 68% adequate, and 15% surplus.
