Looking back through 50 years of Sale of Champions history

The Ohio State Fair is a little more than a week away from kicking off its 2017 run. Concluding this year’s fair is the 50th Sale of Champions, held August 6 at 2 p.m. at the Celeste Center.

Together with the Ohio Expo Center, we dug through our archives and found pieces of the rich history of the unique event down the years. Its tradition of being filled with lively individuals interested in the future of young people continues today.

This video sees appearances by the late Ed Johnson, Bob Evans, auctioneer Merlin Woodruff, and Governor James Rhodes. Side Dressing Corn with Manure

Ohio State University Extension Nutrient Management Field Specialist Glen Arnold and Ohio State University Extension Educator Sam Custer have been running tests on side dressing corn with manure since 2013. This spring, they purchased a new piece of equipment to make this unorthodox task a bit more efficient. Feeding Farmers Week #3 – Niese Farms

The crew of the Ohio Ag Net traveled to north central Ohio to have lunch with the Niese Family for the third installment of the 2017 Feeding Farmers campaign, courtesy of AgriGold. The unique history of the operation goes back to Jerry Niese and his ability to pull through the rough farming times of the 1980s. The determination, spirit, and family ties are on full display in this video interview with Jerry, as well as grandson Alex Fike. Family looks to continue running the operation for years to come with Jerry’s son, Rick, and his son, Casey, involved heavily with day-to-day work.

2017 Corn Planting Cab Cam – Ohio State Speed Trials

This Spring, the Ohio State University is testing out the new Early Riser high speed planter from Case IH. The Ohio Ag Net’s Ty Higgins found Andrew Klopfenstein, Project Coordinator with Ohio State’s Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department, as fields were being planted at speeds ranging from 5 mph to 12 mph+ in Fayette County.… Continue reading

Feeding Farmers Week #1 – McChesney Farms

The first stop for the 2017 AgriGold Feeding Farmers tour was in Edison, Ohio at McChesney Farms. Phil and his family farm about 3,200 acres in Morrow County and in addition to growing corn, soybeans, wheat and hay, the McChesneys also have a hog operation. The Ohio Ag Net’s Dale Minyo found out more about the farm and the straining planting season while visiting with Phil.
