Ohio farmers made the most of 5.8 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending Aug. 2, as favorable crop progress continued across much of the state. Corn and soybean development remained ahead of both last week and five-year averages, while crop condition ratings held steady with a majority of acres reported in good to excellent condition.
Corn silking has reached 90%, ahead of last week’s 63%, and well ahead of the 83% five-year average. Corn reaching the dough stage is at 37%, above the 30% average. Ohio corn condition was rated 61% good to excellent, with 49% good and 12% excellent.
Soybean blooming reached 87%, ahead of 70% last week and the 84% average. Soybean pod setting has reached 58%, ahead of last week’s 33% and above the 52% five-year average. Ohio soybean condition was rated 59% good to excellent, with 50% good and 9% excellent.
Winter wheat is 100% harvested, which is right on track with the five-year average.
Oat harvest is 76% complete, ahead of the 72% five-year average. The condition was rated 84% good to excellent.
Soil moisture dropped as warmer temperatures set in, making topsoil moisture rated at 69% adequate and 1% surplus, while subsoil moisture was also 69% adequate and 3% surplus.
