New Ohio Ag Net Mobile Studio

I often tell people I’m Dale’s sidekick. He’s batman and I’m Robin. Nothing proves the point more than when you see the cool soy biodiesel mobile he drives.  Our new mobile studio was just finished and his RAM truck that runs on soy biodiesel recently got a new look to match. You certainly can’t miss him when he comes to town!

The mobile studio host a satellite uplink that allows us to have an internet signal and broadcast from virtually anywhere. Now guests come into our studio to be interviewed and we can still visit with others through the large window opening on the side. The broadcasting equipment stays protected inside and it’s self sufficient with a generator tucked inside the front of the trailer.

Look for us at fairs, field days and events throughout the summer. Be sure to stop by and say hello. If you’re a fan of Ohio Ag Net on Facebook or a subscriber to our e-newsletter, Digital Dale, you can pick up your free Dale soy biodiesel shirt at any remote broadcast.… Continue reading

Late Season Diseases: Making an Early Appearance in Soybeans

By Anne Dorrance, Ohio State University Extension plant pathologist

Early reports of several late season diseases are common in Ohio this year. The following is a list of key characters to help in diagnosis:

  • · A patch of stunted, short plants with leaves normal in size is soybean cyst nematode (SCN). This is the time of year where the pockets within a field can be found that have very high SCN levels. If you are walking through waist-high soybeans and all of sudden the beans are knee high, it is time to dig some up and take a look at the roots to look for those SCN females.
  • · If there is a brown canker on the stem, early wilting and early death, there are two possibilities — Phytophthora stem canker or Diaporthe stem canker. Phytophthora is very prevalent this year, especially in fields with high levels of clay and have been receiving weekly rains.

Run in With the Crop Duster

Last week late in the afternoon I was on the phone with our website provider in my home office when I heard the loudest noise. I asked him, “did you hear that”? He said, “yeah, that was really loud, what was it”? I responded that is sounded like an airplane going down my road. I get off the phone and I heard it again. I went into the kitchen to look out the window to see what was driving by when instead I see an airplane coming right at my house. Had I not been screaming and focusing on the nose of the plane I probably could have seen the color of the pilots eyes! Just as he began to fly over my grass that is only a 40 feet strip between the field and my house he quickly pulled the plane straight up in the air.

After my blood pressure came back down, I went to front porch to see that he was coming back for another pass and the plane was a crop duster spraying my neighbors field.… Continue reading

New Morning Schedule for Aug. 5 Ohio Composting Tour

A central Ohio composting facility that takes in 150,000 cubic yards of yard trimmings and food waste every year, equal to the loads of nearly 40,000 pickup trucks, and makes sellable mulches and soil blends.

A new renewable energy system set to generate 1 million watts of electricity an hour from, among other things, sewage from the city of Columbus.

How to meet Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards for composting facilities, pass an inspection, and protect both your workers and business.

Learn about all that more at Composting in Ohio 2010: A Tour of the Industry, Thursday, Aug. 5, 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m., in and around Columbus.

Organizers say the program is for composting facility operators, researchers, educators, public-agency personnel, government officials and anyone else with an interest in large-scale composting and compost use.

No Stove & No Dishes

This is for all you ‘meat and potato’ eaters out there. One of my favorite meals is pork chops (of course), fried potatoes and green beans. Not having air conditioning, or a dishwasher for that matter, I have to get creative in the summer, making meals that don’t require the stove. One day while craving this meal I came up with a way to enjoy it on the grill. I love to make things in foil packets. Not only is it an all-in-one meal, but my dishwasher, Zach greatly appreciates the night off too :)

I recently shared the recipe on Good Day Columbus on Fox 28 in Columbus as part of their $10 Tuesday’s where I’m challenged to make a meal for a family of four that is under $10.

Also check out the step-by-step photo instructions for the Pork Chop Potato Foil Packet meal on my blog Heather’s Helpings.… Continue reading

‘Farmcation’ in Iowa

My husband, Zach and I both love to drive around and look at farms. We appreciate a well kept farm and a good field of corn. For as long a I can remember Zach has wanted to go to Iowa. We’ve both visited the state before, but just flew in for work. When his work brought him to Iowa this time, he thought it was the perfect opportunity for us to extend the visit and make a vacation out of it.

In the vacation negotiation a stop in Chicago was agreed upon so I could spend time in one of my favorite spots, the Magnificent Mile on Michigan Avenue. It’s one of the shopping wonders of the world. I’m not sure this could have been a more unusual trip. Downtown Chicago one day, the middle of nowhere, Iowa, the next.

I had no idea the state had so many dirt roads.… Continue reading

Soybean Rust Confirmed in Southern U.S.

Soybean rust has been reported on soybeans in the southern United States for the first time this year, but it’s unlikely that Ohio soybean growers will have to worry about the disease this growing season.

“The first find of soybean rust was reported in Texas on June 10, on the border with Mexico. Current predictions for other southern states is that they won’t begin to detect it for another 4 weeks at the earliest because of unfavorable weather conditions for the disease to spread,” said Anne Dorrance, an Ohio State University Extension plant pathologist with the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center. “As a result, for Ohio, we are at a very low risk for soybean rust to develop this season.”

Soybean rust has not yet been reported in Ohio. Last year was the closest it came to the state, with detections in Kentucky in early September, followed a month later on late-planted soybeans in southern Indiana.… Continue reading
